I just finished watching an old Filipino movie from 1976 by acclaimed Philippine director Lino Brocka simply entitled: Insyang. Starring Hilda Koronel, Ruel Vernal, Rez Cortes and the talented actress Ms. Mona Lisa.
Just as I thought, Philippine cinema had not always been like this. There was a moment in time when film makers knew how to tell their stories and that Filipino movies were worth watching. This was one of them.
The film was brilliantly penned by Mario O'Hara, a name so familiar and whose work I would like to delve on and know more about. I've heard so much of the director, Lino Brocka and the writer, Mario O'Hara growing up. I wonder when Philippine cinema took the drastic turn from making exceptional films to utterly annoying and bad movies.
'Insyang', a role that the dashing Hida Koronel had portrayed so well, is a story that follows a young woman with her painful ordeal living in a shanty with her mother, Mona Lisa and her bruiser gigolo lover, Ruel vernal. Having been raped by her mother's boyfriend and called a liar by her own mother, she plotted her revenge. And revenge is sweet when the outcome is exactly how you wished for it to happen.
She lured Ruel Vernal into thinking she had fallen for him. At night when her mother was deeply asleep, she welcomed him into her bed. Through him she completed her revenge by turning her mother against him-- thrusting a knife in his back as she, Hilda Koronel, stoically watched him bleed to death.
The story line is familiar and simple but the kick is with the acting and story-telling. This is when movie-making in the Philippines was taken seriously and that every detail counted. The set was awesome. Wardrobe and make-up helped told their stories in addition to superb cinematography. The dialogs were great. Every scene was important. Not a moment was wasted.
I love every bit of the movie. This is what Filipino film-making should be: beautiful in every way. A weekend with a couple of good movies out of the 10 Filipino movies that I watched was not bad at all.
I highly recommend 'Insyang' and give it 4 stars. Kudos to the cast and to the people who made it happened especially to Hilda Koronel and Ms. Mona Lisa who showed exceptional talents that I enjoyed so much.

Ang Lahat Ng Ito'y Para Sa'yo, 1998 --- A pleasant Surprise!
I was pleasantly surprised when I bumped into this old movie entitled: Ang Lahat Ng Ito'y Para Sa'yo (all these for you). Produced in 1998 by Viva Films. Starring Angelu De Leon, Bobby Andrews, Maureeen Mauricio, Robert Arevalo and Ms. Caridad Sanchez.
I haven't watched Filipino movies for more than a decade simply for the fact that Filipino movies are a waste of time. I stood corrected!
This movies was simply amazing! I was blown away by the story line. It's not the typical Filipino movie that was poorly written and directed and, that acting was absolutely horrendous the only good thing about it was to avoid it--- completely! (My brother to this day refuses to watch any of them).
This movie was all the opposite of what I was expecting.
I laid on bed with my beautiful wife ready to talk over the movie and notice every detail that was bad like I always do with countless other Filipino films that my father in-law had brought from the Philippines.
The movie opened with Bobby Andrews escaped being run over by a chauffeur-driven car with Angelu De Leon and her sister. The movie moved on with the main characters meeting for the second time in the restaurant where Andrews worked as a waiter. She was so smitten she did everything to win him over.
I was eagerly awaiting to find some flaws to comment on but could not find anything wrong with the movie (Actually there were some but they were all minor I am willing to overlook. How pathetic. I watch Filipino movies to badmouth). I thought everything was well put together. Acting was short of being superb. Director Mac C. Alejandre was outstanding. Writer Wali Ching was brilliant! Even the cinematography by Rollie Manuel was better. The sound and set design were great and the film in general showcased the Filipinos and their life in the Philippines in a good light, respecting every detail.
When the young couple eloped into Ms. Caridad Sanchez's vacant apartment, I was captivated. Ms. Sanchez was charismatic and beautiful. She and Angelu had good chemistry and played their roles so well.
The movie was just simply amazing I could not help but be amazed. Tears gushed out of my eyes like water in a faucet when Angelu succumbed to the heart wrenching illness that was cancer in the ovary. Her love for him was so pure and true she did everything to make him happy. It broke my heart when she announced her wish to die in his arms and refused to be taken away from him by her own father for treatment abroad.
Angelu was an angel on earth. Her acting was flawless. What a movie! Indeed the best movie I've seen in years in any languages! (I have both Netflix and Blockbuster unlimited accounts. Both can't keep up with me it's driving me crazy).
And for the first time I was proud. This is a quality Filipino film worthy of an Oscar or FAMAS as they have it in the Philippines.
I would not hesitate to recommend this film to everyone I know. I wish it's available with English subtitles so I can share it with friends who were curious about Philippine cinema. This movie belongs to the top of my list (I will be coming out of my all-time favorites soon).
My rating for this film is 5 stars. This is great considering I've only about 4 other Filipino films that I thought were great out of hundreds that I've so far watched since I came back patronizing Philippine cinema for the sake of my wife and children (they like Philippine cinema though they agree with me that most are stupid and insulting to the Filipinos. If you've watched them, you'll know what I mean).
To end, I have faith in Philippine cinema. I see hope and great promise. New directors, writers and producers have emerged into the scene with fresh ideas to change the trend and bring back the quality that once was prevalent back in the 50's and 60's when Philippine cinema was considered best in Asia.

Iron Man came short
Today, most movies made in Hollywood are typically relying on CG and expensive SFX. Add a ton of money and explosions and the movie is made. It would add some validity to throw in top-named actors as well. These are ingredients to a well made movie-- to say the least.
Unfortunately, without a good story-line, though some could manage to rake in millions of dollars in revenue for lack of choices primarily, these movies are doomed to be remembered just for their eye candies. Eye-candies are not at all bad but for crying outloud eye-candies are meant to be used to enhance a film (like you would on seasoning and spices on food).
The other way of looking at it, imagine an expensive muscle car driven by Richard Petty -- or some other great drivers who race cars for a living-- that looks great on the outside but has merely an inferior Kia or Hyundai under the hood.
Robert Downey Jr. is on the top of the food chain. You can't get a better actor to play the Iron Man. With his great talent and name alone, one may actually gamble to pay to see him in a movie-- especially when you have a new (to the big screen) and great comic character in the form of Iron Man.
After watching the movie, Iron Man to me was nothing but just that: Eye candy.
Let me point out the good and bad:
GOOD:
1. Great cast: Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges.
2. SFX were awesome!
3. Iron Man himself was well-designed and Robert Downey Jr. played the part so well.
4. I thought Tony Stark being out in the desert with the troops was a very good premise. The whole story in general wasn't very bad. They could have paid more attention to the execution and to the details and the movie certainly would have a lasting effect and, perhaps made more money in the box-office.
BAD:
1. When Tony Stark (Robert Downey, jr.) was caught by terrorists and was forced to build his new invention from a cave (mind you, I've bought the idea that it could actually happen. Yeah, I know).
2. Really bad when Iron Man first appeared fresh from the lab-cave and fought the terrorists with his might. Notice how the bullets could not penetrate the iron suit nor the bombs couldn't blow the suit into pieces. Then he flew up into the air leaving behind an awesome and great explosion. Again pay attention, the suit was still intact until Tony Stark, now the Iron Man, landed on the desert in full impact! The impact was so devastating it dug a burning hole you'd think a meteor have caused it. The impact was so devastating it caused the suit to disintegrate or break into pieces. But not our hero. Against all that devastating impact, Tony Stark came out unscathed with merely a minor bruise to show. And to top it all off, he did not have anything in the suit that would protect him from such a DEVASTATING impact!
3. When Tony Stark finally got to his lab and tested the just finished and modified Iron Suit, he was slammed against the wall for erroneously calculated the pressure to use for his jet-propelled boots. Again he came out unscathed. But when he landed short of target from descending upright and caused a minor crash, this time he had a bandage- apparently he had succumbed to a bruise. The detail here was totally over-looked it's laughable. It's almost comedic in a most horrible way.
4. I thought the movie took a nose dive when Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges), after a fall out from Stark, went to the desert to meet with the terrorist, Raza (Faran Tahir) , and formed a more sinister alliance. This was quite convenient I thought. The U.S. government and its allies not to mention the great technology they're using and the billions of dollars they spent to fight off terrorism could not locate these terrorists but Obadiah Stane could. What are these people thinking?
5. Lastly, I would not even get into the details, the final confrontation was poorly executed. It's just disappointing!
The movie could have been better. They have a great product with talented actors not to mention the budget to do everything right.
Iron Man became a big hit simply because everyone wants to see a new superhero come alive on screen. Additionally, there was no alternative available.
My views here maybe unpopular but I sure do know a good movie when I see one. Iron Man came short. Perhaps next time...

The Dark Knight Review
I didn't think I would find a good topic to blog about until tonight. after I watching the most talked about movie of the summer, I thought I had to write something about 'The dark k Knight'.
After painfully watching the movie, I was compelled to blog about it so I can present my own opinion of the movie that is radically different from that of my peers. My thoughts may be unpopular as 7 out of 10 people say the movie was all positive but I'd like to be one of those who say that the movie wasn't all that
When Dark Knight first came out to theaters, friends constantly ask if I get the chance to see the movie. My reply was always a resounding no. First, I was skeptical. Second, I thought the movie was way over hyped. But from what I hear, the movie was awesome. Especially when it broke records of sales at the box office (as of this writing, The Dark Night is trailing Titanic in the number one spot of the biggest money-making movie of all time).
I began forming my thoughts about the movie while having dinner with my wife and kids. We talked about it and I got some of their opinions as well. I was so excited that I could not wait to talk about it. I didn't want to wait until Monday when my office-mates and I can partake in a quite stimulating (oftentimes heated) conversation. I thought I had to create a blog so I can reach a wider audience and perhaps get their own views of the movies as well.
I have a list of good and bad things about the movie but let me start by writing that I thought the visuals were good. The action was great! But if you take all the expensive SFX and the millions of dollars the producers poured into the movie out of the equation, the story-line could not stand on its own. I would not deny that there were some great moments in the film.
The following lists both the good and bad about the movie in my opinion as a genuine movie buff.
THE GOOD:
1. In the scene where two passenger ships were held captive, the refusal of two gentlemen to pull the trigger to blow each other's ship to kingdom come -- one loaded with good citizens trying to escape Gotham; the other, fille with convicted criminals-- was very good. I thought it was incredible to be moral and choose the higher good against saving your own life in a very critical situation.
2. The acting and dialogs were superb and smart, and the pacing was exciting. Some time
3. The sound and editing were astonishing. The cinematography was also great! The money they spent on it, awesome!
THE BAD:
1. Everything was so convenient for the Joker played by the late Heath Ledger. He was so much powerful than Superman himself-- I thought. I don't know about you but he being able to plant all those explosives in any given time and place without being detected was just dumb. I understand this was a fantasy movie but I'm sure you'd agree when I write that they could've at least made it looked a bit smarter.
I had a lot of problem comprehending how the Joker was able to plant explosives at the hospital, at the police station -- not to mention slipping in a cellphone or a detonator into the body of one of the inmates -- and wiring yet more explosives on two sea vessels without having been detected. I guess everyone in Gotham looked the other way when the Joker was around.
2. The Joker was so clever and smart he knew things even before they happened. I am talking about the chasing scene with the DA (Aaron Eckhart) with rocket propelled grenades. While doing this, the Joker seemed to be already scheming to get caught by Det. Lt. James Gordon (Gary Oldman) - who at that time was thought to be dead-- so he can get into prison and do his next act.
3. I can't understand how Batman (Christian Bale) and Det. Lt. James Gordon leave a very dangerous man in the form of the Joker in the interrogation room without handcuffs and, guarded, mind you, simply by a lone and out of shape cop in the same room? Would not be the SOP for this matter was to put the criminal (in this case a very dangerous criminal) back to his cell where he couldn't do any harm to others? I thought the witers (Jonathan and Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer) and director, Christopher Nolan got way too sloppy with a film with this magnitude.
4. After the precinct explosion, the Joker was the only one left standing and unscathed while others in the building were blown away to pieces. What was the Joker made of, steel? Could they have not made it more dramatic? I am not trying to pick on every detail (usually I'd let the details go if the story can hold. The story-line on Dark Knight could not hold unfortunately).
5. More on stating the bad, DA, Harvey Dent who had now transformed to Two-Face wore an outfit that did not call for the state of his character at that particualr time. Take note, this time, he was fresh from the accident and his mission at the moment was to avenge his girlfriend and fiance, Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal) who had met a terrible death. It was almost laughable to see Harvey Dent became so immersed with the Two-Face villain character that he had to wear that ridiculous outfit (we know it's the Two-Face signature look but could not the creator of this movie give him some time to get crazy to get into all that?).
There's more bad moments that I could think of to write but I would not want to get too critical of the movie to the extent of being too picky. I'm sorry I didn't get to finish the last 8 or so minutes of the film as I dozed off.
I actually wanted to bail out a little after the precinct scene but I wanted to see where the most talked about Batman high-pitched squeal took place. I assumed the 'squeal' was the precinct scene when Batman gave Joker a beating. I didn't see anything wrong with that. I thought Christian Bale did a great job being Batman though I also didn't enjoy the first bat movie (Batman Begins) he did in 2005. I am a big fan of the guy. He did all the right things for the film but the film itself did not deliver well in my opinion.
I wasn't surprised though that this film was making a killing in the box office. After all Batman is a great franchise. That alone will sure draw big dollars. Throw in millions of dollars into the production to buy CG, SFX and top actors, even with the absence of a good story-line people will pay to see the movie. I know because I did pay to see it. I won't ask for my money back but I sure would like to voice out my opinion about it. I give the film a generous 2 stars.
What do you think? Please let me know as I would love to know your thoughts.
